Souma Ayame :
Ayame is
the male-lead's, Yuki's, older brother. Like all the other Souma's',
Ayame is cursed by the Jyuunishi and transforms into a snake. He
runs his own boutique which manufactures any clothing that the customers
demand. As a fashion designer, he always dresses up in clothes that seem
to be rather unusual for a person of his age.
Ayame grew up with
Souma Shigure and Souma Hatori - his cousins and arguably his best
friends. His younger brother, Yuki, was raised up separately. Their
relation is further damned by an age gap of 10 years. For many reasons,
Ayame feels guilty about his distant relationship with Yuki and he's
always trying to make up for it.
Souma Kagura :
Kagura is
one of the few characters who adds to the humurous aspect of Fruits
Basket. She is in love, or in fact, severely obsessed with Kyo and often
expresses her feelings in a very violent manner. In the first episode
that she appeared, Kagura was initially depicted as a polite little girl
patiently looking for Kyo. Ironically when she found him, she was struck
by such excitement and joy that she kicked him from one side of the
house to the other side.
Kagura attained
her martial arts from Souma Kazuma, Kyo's legal guardian. And so, it's
fair to say that she really does put up a good fight - Kyo doesn't just
let her hit him. She develops a very strong relationship with her love
rival, Tohru, because they share many interests, habits and
characteristics.
Souma Momji :
Momji's a
half-German and half-Japanese inbred. When Momji's mother gave birth to
him, she couldn't accept the fact that her son was cursed by the Jyuunishi
- the rabbit. She was so stupefied that Momji's dad decided it's
best for her to permanently forget about Momji. And so, the couple led a
new life elsewhere (without Momji) and had a daughter (who is not cursed
by the Jyuunishi) called Momo.
Momji sometimes
visits his dad, whom he still keeps in contact with, at his work - where
Tohru works as a cleaner - in order to catch a glimpse of his mother and
his sister. His dad forbids him to reveal his identity to his mother or
to his sister. Although he looks childish, Momji is arguably one of the
most mature and independent characters in the anime and in the manga.
Souma Hatsuharu :
Haru, the
ox-cursed Souma, has a split personality which he developed at a very
early age. The other Souma members around him used to ridicule his
intelligence by comparing him to the stupid ox from the Jyuunishi
legend.
Although Haru's
permanent depression was eventually relieved by Yuki and he was won onto
Yuki's side, his angry personality never subsided. His parents decided
to let him learn martial arts so he may exert his anger. Overtime,
Haru's condition improved and he became a loving, mettle person again.
But every while and then White Haru, who is gentle and quiet, would
suffer from his split personality illness and revert back to the Black
Haru who is rude, indolent and troublesome.
Overall, Haru is
an interesting and funny character. He realises that Yuki has developed
a liking towards Tohru so he tries to him help by encouraging Yuki to
loosen up his personality and talk more openly in front of Tohru.
Souma Kisa :
Just as
Kyo and Yuki resemble their Jyuunishi counterparts, Kisa's
orangey hair is supposed to accentuate her link with the tiger. Kisa's a
problematical child who struggles to socialise with other people. At an
early age, Kisa was bullied by her schoolmates to such an extent that
she became very withdrawn from everybody. This was followed by her
refusal to go to school and finally her determination to run away from
home. She does, however, manage to get along with Tohru and even looks
up to her as an older sister. Her adoration for Tohru is reflected in
the way that she's always tagging along behind her.
Her best friend in
elementary school was probably Hiro, whom she had known very well ever
since early childhood. Hiro developed a liking towards her and he
eventually consulted Akito for his approval. Akito dismissed his
feelings and beats up Kisa! ^_^
